THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Design the whole system

The space inside is part of the design.

Blocking, partitions and cushioning solve different problems. Describe the problem before choosing a material.

Say what must not move

Show permitted orientation, contact areas and vulnerable parts. Explain how the package may be handled. Give the supplier a realistic view of the product and the route rather than requesting a generic insert.

Keep support and protection connected

Ask how internal components attach or stay in place, and whether their assembly can be inspected. The packer needs instructions that match the final system. Keep prototypes and final specifications distinguishable.

Consider the end of the journey

Describe how the receiver can remove the item and separate packaging materials. Where reuse is intended, ask which components may be reused and which require replacement or inspection.

Technical context: PCA · packaging to contain products ↗. This note prepares a specification conversation. Confirm the actual design and shipping requirements with the responsible supplier and carrier.
