THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Start with the load

A kit contains several packing problems.

A carton count is not a component count. Keep the kit’s contents and protection needs traceable.

Map the contents

List each component, its quantity and whether it can share a compartment. Include loose accessories and printed instructions. Make the checklist useful to the person packing and the person receiving.

Separate unlike contact needs

Identify heavy, sharp and delicate pieces that should not move together. Ask the supplier to assess partitions, internal supports and the sequence in which pieces are packed. Avoid treating empty space as adequate restraint.

Document the opening sequence

Show the receiver how the kit is organized and which parts should be checked first. Confirm whether the packaging must support returns or repeated opening. The next use affects the specification.
