THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Start with the load

Long parts need a support story.

Lengths, exposed ends and balance can matter as much as the overall package size.

Measure the complete envelope

Include protective caps and protrusions in the item dimensions. Mark areas that may not take contact. Show the centre of balance when known, rather than assuming a long item is evenly distributed.

Describe every unsupported span

Give the packaging supplier a drawing of proposed supports and handling points. Do not assume a long corrugated sleeve will support the item between them. Structural decisions need a review of the actual product.

Plan the receiving space

Check doorways, staging space and unloading equipment with the destination. Record whether the item must remain oriented during handling. A compact packing drawing should still describe how the package moves.
