THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Start with the load

Protect the finish as well as the shape.

An item that arrives intact can still be unusable if its finish has rubbed or marked.

Identify sensitive surfaces

Photograph the finished item and label surfaces that may not contact the package. Describe coatings, sharp edges and removable protectors. Keep product-specific handling requirements beside the dimensions.

Ask for a complete protective design

Discuss contact materials, movement restraint and unpacking with the packaging supplier. A generic clearance allowance is not a cushioning design. Require a review appropriate to the product and shipping environment.

Define the acceptance check

Agree how the item will be inspected at packing and receipt. Document the starting condition and where handling marks would be unacceptable. That gives both parties a clearer description than “fragile.”
