THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Start with the load

Small footprint. Concentrated load.

A compact part can ask more of the bottom and internal supports than its size suggests.

Locate the contact points

Record the part’s weight and the surfaces that actually touch its support. Include feet, shafts and protrusions. A single total weight leaves the packaging designer to guess where the load enters the package.

Separate containment from restraint

Explain what prevents the item moving, and what supports it below. A stronger outer wall alone does not describe the internal system. Ask the supplier to assess the part, support and handling arrangement together.

Show the unpacking method

Tell the designer how the receiver will remove the item. Include lifting points and the equipment expected at arrival. Keep any uncertain weight or support information visible in the brief.
