THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / Follow the handling

A return trip is a new use case.

Reusable packaging needs an operating routine, not just a stronger-looking outer box.

Define the return load

Explain whether the package comes back empty, with a repaired item or with a different product. The size, support and protection requirements may change between legs. Give the designer both journeys.

Specify the inspection decision

Ask which components require inspection, replacement or retirement. Record who makes the decision and how the result is marked. Keep unreviewed repairs out of the repeat-use process.

Measure the operating cycle

Track accepted returns, losses, damage and storage space using actual observations. Use that history to improve the next specification. Avoid treating a projected cycle count as proven performance.
