THE PACKAGING SPECIFICATION NOTEBOOK / The specification notebook

Put the weight where it belongs in the drawing.

Total weight is essential, but a useful brief also shows how the item transfers that weight to the package.

Use a measured or documented value

Record the actual item weight and the source of that value. Distinguish it from packed weight and from an estimate. Include separate component weights for a mixed kit when known.

Sketch the bearing areas

Identify feet, edges, brackets or other points that touch the support. Mark restrictions on where the item can be held. The supplier needs those details to assess load distribution and restraint.

Ask for the packed-system review

Include the base, internal supports and enclosure in the conversation. Confirm how the final packed weight will be determined. Do not treat this information checklist as a structural calculation.

Technical context: FedEx · freight packing guidance ↗. This note prepares a specification conversation. Confirm the actual design and shipping requirements with the responsible supplier and carrier.

Keep building the brief.
